LDLHS Winter Programme Talk 21st September

The RAF in NW England during the Second World War

The presentation by Ian Tyler will be concerned with the RAF’s role in the North West during the last war. The numerous local airfields provided facilities for the manufacture of aircraft, the training of aircrew, the development of key technologies to support the war effort and to facilitate the operations of Bomber Command and Coastal Command, and the provision of staging posts for the US air force. Ian Tyler is a renowned mining historian and was the curator of the Keswick mining museum until its closure. He is a leading authority on the subject of mining in Cumbria and the North Pennines. He is the author of many books on the industrial heritage of this area. The following is a selection from over a dozen books he has written.

  • Cross Fell and Mines of the Cumbrian Pennines 2014
  • Gypsum in Cumbria: A History of the Gypsum and Anhydrite Mining in Cumbria 2000
